QUALCOMM, a San Diego based company, developed IS-95, Direct-Sequence-CDMA system for use in mobile communications. QUALCOMM filed patent applications, addressing the use of CDMA in various fields, e.g,, satellite, cellular, PCS, cordless telephone and wireless local loop.

QUALCOMM produces CDMA network equipment to service providers for use in cellular and PCS field evaluations. The company is positioned to produce its own CDMA subscriber equipment, but it also licenses Intellectual Property Rights to companies desiring to manufacture CDMA equipment, and also realizes income from the sale of its CDMA ASIC chip sets to licensed manufacturers.
